The total of confirmed a swine flu 09 cases in Australia as at 1700 AEST has increased to 1006 – with most new cases in Victoria. Victoria now has 874 confirmed cases of swine flu 09, with a further 122 cases confirmed overnight.
Today, there have also been three new confirmed cases recorded in Queensland, two in South Australia, one in NSW, one in the ACT and one in Tasmania.
Earlier this morning, Queensland Health reported two new cases. The first is a student from Smithfield State High School in Cairns. The teenager did not attend school while infectious and there is no associated school closure. A second case in Queensland is a young child from Blackwater. The child has not attended school since returning from Melbourne and becoming ill, and there is no associated school closure. Since these two cases were reported, another – a Moreton Bay resident – has been confirmed. Queensland Health has begun contact tracing.
Tasmania now has six confirmed cases of swine flu 09.The sixth person is from Tasmania’s South and became sick after traveling to Victoria. The person is in home isolation and is following the advice of public health officials.
NSW has one new case. There are now 75 confirmed cases in NSW, with 54 of these associated with the Pacific Dawn cruise ship, a further 17 associated with overseas travel and four cases acquired in Melbourne.
